Chalmers library and the AHA! festival invites everyone to an event based on the One Book One Chalmers book for this year: Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams. This praised first book by Carty-Williams engages in questions of sexism and racism in Great Britain through a sharp language, lots of humour, and the relatable experience of living in the 21st century.

Lovette Jallow, a writer, entrepreneur, and activist, will hold a lecture about racism and white privilege. She will talk about her personal experiences as an African-Swedish woman in a society where being white is the norm, and discuss how can we can change structures and become more inclusive in our language and our treatment of other people.

Lovette’s lecture is rounded up by a discussion with students from JämK, Chalmers Equality Committee. They depart from questions such as: How can literature help us see the structures around us? How does these structures, for example white privilege, affect the work of engineers and the technological systems they produce?

In his painting, Mats Stammarnäs examines how color and shape relate to the flat surface and how these elements can lead the viewer into the painting. The painting is abstract and free from the depicting motif. Horizon, the horizontal and the vertical are always included in the composition, but the painting is deprived of the traditional perspective. Distance and depth are shaped with the help of the color and shape of the painting as well as light and dark.

During the painting process, Mats lets the canvas and what has been painted lead to the next step in the process. The technique consists of many thin layers of oil paint on top of each other that play against adjacent fields. The color is not only a color but also a texture that affects the movement towards form.

Mats Stammarnäs is educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo and Valand Art Academy in Gothenburg.

Lab grown seafood or cultivated seafood has the mission to provide an alternative that will not harm the ocean’s ecosystem. This alternative product must appeal to the customers senses to be a successful food item. With the knowledge of food science, we can tailor the texture, taste, smell, and appearance to be similar to conventional seafood products. We bring in instruments that mimic the mouth, the tongue, the nose, and the eyes to verify the recipes of the products before the final human tasting panel. We hope to create alternative seafood products that will appeal to the customers and save the oceans.

Fredrik Höök and Hana Jungova discuss different aspect of color vision. How many different types of color receptors do we have and how does our perception of different colors emerge? How long time does it take to initiate a nerve signal and how long time is required to reactivate a receptor after having sensed light? Color vision will be demonstrated with interactive illustrations, or rather illusions, which might make us question whether we see with the eyes or the brain…

What is the color of the yellow house?

The architect and researcher Kine Angelo focus talks about how colors affect us in our built environment, with reference to perception and color theory. What is the relationship between light and color? Between shape and color? How do the colors interact in our physical environment?

Janina Neufeld, neuroscientist, presents the brain mechanisms underlying color perception in general, and also the phenomenon called "synesthesia" where for instance music or words can lead to specific, automatic color experiences.

What it means to experience synesthesia will be further clarified in a conversation between synesthete Åsa Gustafsson and synesthesia researcher Janina Neufeld.

Concluding conversation with the sessions speakers, answer/questions about color.

A panel with Rosie McClune, musician and composer, Gunnar Bjursell, Director for the Culture, Cognition and Health Center at the Karolinska institute, and musicians from the three days of the festival, people like Anja Lechner and Francois Coturier, Gaspar Borchardt, a violin maker from Cremona, known from the documentary “The quest for tone wood”, with musical interventions by Daniel Berg och Tobias Granmo, will pick up the question once raised by the film director Ingmar Bergman.

The intention is not to give an answer but to celebrate the question.

The song Quantum Revolution is unique in several ways - among other things, it contains the sound from an atom, based on a recording by scientists from Chalmers who were the first in the world to come up with how to listen to an atom. The song performed by Emanuel Bagge also has a close connection to Chalmers quantum computer project.

The song came about after the songwriter and journalist Sara Bergqvist visited Chalmers to interview Professor Per Delsing and write an article about him and what will be the world's most powerful quantum computer. She got caught up in the sound of the cooling pumps cooling down the quantum bits and later came back and recorded it. During the interview, Per also told about how he and his colleagues discovered how to listen to the sound of an atom by exciting it and placing it on a substrate - a discovery that they were the first in the world with. The songwriters took this wonderful popcorn-like sound and made a beat. Then they made a text and melody that tied all this together.

There are many reasons why this song came about. first of all, it is very fun to work in this way with authentic sounds and weave a story around them. It's fun to make songs in multiple layers with multiple meanings. And not least - it feels very fun to do something that can hopefully help to arouse curiosity about physics and science and get more people to choose such a focus for their studies.
