2021 HIGHLIGHTS

THEME 2021: THE SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF

Of course I know! But still…

Imagine sitting in the audience of a theater play when on stage two people are waving a blue plastic sheet between them. A third person comes walking across the stage with a cardboard structure around their waist and two wooden sticks in their hands. It is obvious that what you see is picturing someone in a boat, on the ocean.
If you doubt that and say “I see that it is not the ocean it is plastic!” you will break the necessary agreement in an aesthetic experience. “The suspension of disbelief” seems to be a condition for experiencing different cultural phenomena. Is this also relevant in science and other areas of knowledge production?

Jag vet! Men ändå...

EXHIBITIONS

Every year the AHA! festival presents several exhibitions and workshops which can be viewed at any time during the festival.

Datasal is a music project that was formed by its three members in 2016. The project arose from a desire to create music that is improvised but where we can relate openly to previous genres and what we learned about music. Like constructing an environment for trying and curiosity. The music is built around repetitive sequencer loops and programmed beats where electric bass, electric guitar and flute improvise around a theme. The instruments' audio signals are processed through filters and pedals such as reverb, moog ring modulators, digital echoes and synthesizers.

Mats Stammarnäs - transverse flute
Anders Svensson - electric guitar
Andreas Roth - electric bass

In his painting, Mats Stammarnäs examines how color and shape relate to the flat surface and how these elements can lead the viewer into the painting. The painting is abstract and free from the depicting motif. Horizon, the horizontal and the vertical are always included in the composition, but the painting is deprived of the traditional perspective. Distance and depth are shaped with the help of the color and shape of the painting as well as light and dark.

During the painting process, Mats lets the canvas and what has been painted lead to the next step in the process. The technique consists of many thin layers of oil paint on top of each other that play against adjacent fields. The color is not only a color but also a texture that affects the movement towards form.

Mats Stammarnäs is educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo and Valand Art Academy in Gothenburg.

I have always been fascinated by the combination of colour, light, transparency and materiality. Over the years I have worked with these subjects by different materials and medias for example aquarelle-paintings, silicon casting and for the last year glass casting.

I have worked with great excitement very intuitively with the objects I show in the exhibition. I have been inspired by the colors of autumn but also by Josef Albers and other artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.

Chalmers library and the AHA! festival invites everyone to an event based on the One Book One Chalmers book for this year: Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams. This praised first book by Carty-Williams engages in questions of sexism and racism in Great Britain through a sharp language, lots of humour, and the relatable experience of living in the 21st century.

Lovette Jallow, a writer, entrepreneur, and activist, will hold a lecture about racism and white privilege. She will talk about her personal experiences as an African-Swedish woman in a society where being white is the norm, and discuss how can we can change structures and become more inclusive in our language and our treatment of other people.

Lovette’s lecture is rounded up by a discussion with students from JämK, Chalmers Equality Committee. They depart from questions such as: How can literature help us see the structures around us? How does these structures, for example white privilege, affect the work of engineers and the technological systems they produce?

Tobias Granmo and Daniel Berg are colleagues since many years at The Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg. They are both teachers in violin and percussion instruments respectively and are also personally responsible for the chamber music. The duo Granmo-Berg is regularly invited as guest professors by other universities in Europe to give Master Classes in connection to Concert tours

For this performance they are joined by Tobjörn Grass who Works full time as a freelance musician and has invented the Grassophone.

The grassophone is an invention which sends impulses to electromagnets at different frequences. The magnets can be placed on to any kind of metal object and sounds in five complete octaves. This produces pitches covering a full five octaves. It creates different pitches, and sometimes beats, from the magnet, so called solenoids which, in turn, creates sounds/tones. It also sends impulses to electrical engines which creates movement/sound in the room.

A frozen continent larger than the United States, larger than Australia, which contains 90% of all ice and 80% of all fresh water on earth. Antarctica offers spectacular scenery and a fauna that does not seem to perceive humans as a danger. The continent is surrounded by the Convergence at 55 degrees S where the warm water meets the cold and salty polar water. Antarctica is protected by the Antarctic Treaty and the Madrid Protocol. What will be its future role in the climate?

Join us on three trips with M / S Expedition down to the southern Arctic Circle. Meet whales, seals, albatrosses and penguins on their continent.

Lab grown seafood or cultivated seafood has the mission to provide an alternative that will not harm the ocean’s ecosystem. This alternative product must appeal to the customers senses to be a successful food item. With the knowledge of food science, we can tailor the texture, taste, smell, and appearance to be similar to conventional seafood products. We bring in instruments that mimic the mouth, the tongue, the nose, and the eyes to verify the recipes of the products before the final human tasting panel. We hope to create alternative seafood products that will appeal to the customers and save the oceans.

Fredrik Höök and Hana Jungova discuss different aspect of color vision. How many different types of color receptors do we have and how does our perception of different colors emerge? How long time does it take to initiate a nerve signal and how long time is required to reactivate a receptor after having sensed light? Color vision will be demonstrated with interactive illustrations, or rather illusions, which might make us question whether we see with the eyes or the brain…

What is the color of the yellow house?

The architect and researcher Kine Angelo focus talks about how colors affect us in our built environment, with reference to perception and color theory. What is the relationship between light and color? Between shape and color? How do the colors interact in our physical environment?

This event is in English followed by a discussion in Swedish

Janina Neufeld, neuroscientist, presents the brain mechanisms underlying color perception in general, and also the phenomenon called "synesthesia" where for instance music or words can lead to specific, automatic color experiences.

What it means to experience synesthesia will be further clarified in a conversation between synesthete Åsa Gustafsson and synesthesia researcher Janina Neufeld.

This event will be in both Swedish and English

Concluding conversation with the sessions speakers, answer/questions about color.

Fiskemannens Kompisar is a jazz and funk group consisting of Miles Gerhardt (trumpet), Floyd Gerhardt (saxophone), Sebastian Larsson (saxophone and vocals), Xander Hou (bass), Joel Eng (drums) and Vidar Lindström (guitar). The band members are between 14 and 15 years old and met at one of Vänersborg Jazz Academy's jazz courses for young people. There they had the opportunity to play music together, learn more about making music but not least create strong friendships.

Anja Lechner and François Couturier’s musical collaboration is long established, through their concerts and acclaimed recordings for ECM New Series, both in duo and with the Tarkovsky Quartet. Their successful and highly regarded duo project Moderato Cantabile featured music that oscillated between Orient and Occident. Now, with their new programme Lontano the German cellist and the French pianist traverse a wide musical arc - embracing familiar melodies by Giya Kancheli, Anouar Brahem and others, and pieces which offer scope for improvisation and personal interpretation. François Couturier has also composed new music for the duo that serves as unifying element and provides a context in which improvising and free interpretation can take place.

"The two musicians have refined the art of intense listening. They do not play one note too many, and use improvised passages sparingly, but pointedly. They eavesdrop for a long time and pay microscopic attention to the development of nuanced timbres, to dynamic design."

The song Quantum Revolution is unique in several ways - among other things, it contains the sound from an atom, based on a recording by scientists from Chalmers who were the first in the world to come up with how to listen to an atom. The song performed by Emanuel Bagge also has a close connection to Chalmers quantum computer project.

The song came about after the songwriter and journalist Sara Bergqvist visited Chalmers to interview Professor Per Delsing and write an article about him and what will be the world's most powerful quantum computer. She got caught up in the sound of the cooling pumps cooling down the quantum bits and later came back and recorded it. During the interview, Per also told about how he and his colleagues discovered how to listen to the sound of an atom by exciting it and placing it on a substrate - a discovery that they were the first in the world with. The songwriters took this wonderful popcorn-like sound and made a beat. Then they made a text and melody that tied all this together.

There are many reasons why this song came about. first of all, it is very fun to work in this way with authentic sounds and weave a story around them. It's fun to make songs in multiple layers with multiple meanings. And not least - it feels very fun to do something that can hopefully help to arouse curiosity about physics and science and get more people to choose such a focus for their studies.

The song is written by Sara Bergqvist, Emanuel Bagge Lars Fingal and Per Delsing. Production by Emanuel Bagge and Joakim Buller and Rolf Eriksson.

Julia is studying her fourth year of the engineering programme Biotechnology at Chalmers and alongside her studies she is the president of the Student Union's equality committee at Chalmers, JämK. ABOUT THE AHA! FESTIVAL

The AHA! festival explores encounters between art and science during a two-day event at the Chalmers University of Technology, supported by the Departments of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Physics, Microtechnology and Nanoscience, Industrial and Materials Science and Communication and Learning in Science, and Health Engineering Area of Advance.  It is an international festival intended to provide a stage for enlightening and surprising experiences, staging surprises, new thoughts and displaced perspectives that lead to alternative modes of thinking about exploring the world through art and science. We invite scientists (physicists, historians, astronomers, engineers), artists (dancers, musicians, painters, poets, acrobats) who reside in these borderlands and wish to share their vision and work.

HISTORY

The relation between science and art has become more complex, but is just as important to attend to. Their meeting is still that of theory and practice, but also something more: a meeting of causal connections and meaningful coherences, of given conditions and unsuspected possibilities, of the order of things and our own place within it.

Today, ”science” no longer refers to systematic knowledge, but rather to a highly professionalised, specialised and often technically advanced activity intended for the production of empirically secure facts. Similarly, ”art” is no longer a methodical ability, but rather a complex and autonomous activity comparable to science: the creation of images, sounds, and other forms of sensuous experience with a most immediate effect. Forms that grab hold, shake up, leave us at a loss. Experiences that make us question ourselves and the world around us.

By bringing together science and art, architecture has provided an ideal playing field for such a confrontation for the first two festival in 2014 and 2015. In 2014, October 21–23, the first festival investigated the theme ‘embodiment.’ In 2015, November 2-4 the festival explored numbers, an underlying element in our lives. In year 2016 the festival was a joint voyage between the Departments of Architecture and Department of Physics to explore the theme ‘uni-verse,’ the fabric of life. All festivals offer three days of seminars, workshops, conversations, exhibitions, concerts, performances, and mingles, through thought-provoking experiences, hands-on surprises, itinerant perspectives, and savoury ideas. The festival welcomes students and researchers from all universities, and the general public, to turn the searchlight onto the relation between two different– but equally important – human activities; ’Science and art.’
