ART x SCIENCE

October 21-23 | 2014

DOWNLOAD OUR SUMMARY OF THE AHA FESTIVAL 2014

I sing the body electric. The armies of those I love engirth me and I engirth them. They will not let me off till I go with them, respond to them. And discorrupt them, and charge them full with the charge of the soul.

– Walt Whitman, ”I Sing the Body Electric”, Leaves of Grass (1891–92)

EMBODIMENT

For this edition of the AHA! Festival, hopefully the first of many, we turn the searchlight on a fundamental precondition for art and science alike: embodiment as the bedrock of human experience. Not the body as a "thing among things”, "a collection of physico-chemical processes” – in the words of the philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty – but rather as a "permanent horizon”, "a dimension in relation to which I am constantly situating myself”. Without such a horizon, both art and science would be devoid of meaning as well as direction. Without such a dimension, neither art nor science would be conceivable as the human endeavors that they inescapably are.

And if all this is true of art and science, it is all the more true of architecture. Most at home in the interstices between the one and the other, doesn't architecture boil down precisely to this: a disciplined yet creative exploration of our common state of embodiment?

Day 1: Feet

Tuesday | 10/21

Twenty-six elements, thirty-three joints, three arches: this is the structure on which all of human culture rests. Let us take you for a walk…

    10:00

Walkshop opening + introduction: "The art and science of walking"

Join us for a conversation and walk with artist Hamish Fulton & researcher Francesco Careri. Transversing a landscape using your body is a known and sourced concept in the artistic world. Fulton utilizes walking as a medium to explore and describes his work as ‘What I build is an experience, not a sculpture’, and believes that walking has a spiritual dimension to it whereupon ‘an object cannot compete with an experience’. Careri refers to this as ‘an instrument of phenomenological knowledge and symbolic interpretation of the territory, as a form of a psycho-geographical reading of it.’ We welcome your feet to guide you on an artistic research walk, altering your view of walking and knowledge-making. *Both guests will be joined in the afternoon by Astrid von Rosen in conversation.

    Music Performance: Derek Gripper

Derek Gripper is a world renoun musician from South Africa. His transcriptions of the work of virtuoso Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté began as an ethnographic record. Research as artistic interpretation, connected to the body, and then ‘performed’. Were it to have remained as such, or been accompanied by a written analysis of the music’s structural or cultural significance, the study would have remained in the realm of ethnography and reinforced a fixed view of the performance traditions of Malian griots. His decision to interpret these transcriptions in the tradition of “classical” music took this research to a new creative space, bringing the physicality of the creative act into the realm of ethnography and musical analysis, as well as opening up the possibility of a new performance tradition for Malian music, outside of its usual performance context.

The architectural and design office Uglycute takes part in the architectural competition for a new city hall in the mining city of Kiruna in the north of Sweden. During the work with the competition they end up in a mind expanding treasure hunt. The clues lead them to the skull of the 17th century philosopher Descartes in Paris and back to Lapland and beyond, to the end of the known world. With the help of drugs and black magic, Uglycute continue their search for architectural quality. Will the city of Kiruna approve the proposal?

Day 2: Head

Wednesday | 10/22

”Use you head,” they say. But there’s more to the head than just the brain: eyes and ears, nose and mouth, tongue and lips, pharynx and larynx. Where’s your mind at?
    Morning

    11:00-12:00

Exhibition Vernissage: 'Epicenter' by Peter Christensson + 'The Embodiments' Malgorzata Zboinska (Entrance)

“Epicenter Dancers from Gothenburg City Opera rehearsing. The photographs are shot with an analog viewcamera, with longer exposure times in search of an enhanced understanding of movement and space. What was revealed very clearly for me was, what dancers mean when they say they are Grounded. They also seem to have a very well defined spatial sense and I was fascinated by how they constantly erupted from something very much like an epicentre.”

The Embodiments are six material, 3-d printed artifacts, representing fragments of organic building skins. They were conceived entirely in the digital space, using a carefully-selected, hybrid digital toolset, containing five different design techniques – animation, free-form modeling, generative modeling, parametric modeling, and rapid prototyping. Each artifact is immersed in an intriguing light-and- shadow environment of its exhibition capsule. By looking inside these capsules, the viewers have a unique chance to personally experience the expressive, richly-decorated forms, conceived through a fruitful synergy of human creativity and advanced technology. The complex series of creative acts, leading to the birth of the artifacts, is revealed in the drawings accompanying the exhibition. These acts form multi-faceted design workflows, constantly fluctuating between artistic, fuzzy, instinctive undertakings, and highly rational, algorithmic and mathematical operations.

Vague Research Studios - Kajsa G. Eriksson/Lena TH Berglin
(Phd's: Penny Bergman, Lisa Bomble, Karl-Johan Freden Jansson + Anna Maria Orru)

What are you doing? Well, what are you doing? The idea of a meeting also includes the existence of a distance. By creating an interspace we change the understanding of an event and through a guided tour of different PhD projects there will be other issues and assumptions. Vague Research Studios printer consists of a performative sound and material workshop for students where the music from the video ‘The children, the alcoholics and the artists’ produces diverse sounds and spaces. Two guides will be in conversation with students, other researchers and the audience to launch the printer based on both artistic, technical, social and acoustic research categories. In essence, the printer looks into alternative forms of communicating PhD research. * PhD’s: Penny Bergman, Lisa Bomble, Karl-Johan Freden Jansson & Anna Maria Orru

Seminars: Rickard Åström - with workshop on heart and music (Atelier)

Rickard Åström, Musician/Composer, Musical leader at the Gothenburg Opera and two times Grammy awarded, is part of the research team ‘BodyScore’ in Gothenburg. The team, with researchers from Chalmers and Sahlgrenska hospital, and other faculties of Gothenburg University, are studying the health effects of music. Rickard collaborates with Björn Vickhoff amongst others. In 2013, the team published a study on how music structure synchronises the heart rate variability of singers. The study received lots of international attention in major media and press sources like BBC, CNN, Reuters, der Spiegel, Times etc. In this presentation, Rickard will demonstrate the experiment showing heart rates online and the connections between performers. He will also perform at the piano while the audience is breathing synchronised to further demonstrate the research findings. Join us in this workshop/seminar where heart meets brain.

Poetry Readings with Jaap Blonk, Lina Ekdahl, Morten Søndergaard, Fredrik Nyberg and others (Moderator: Peter Christensson)

For 7 years we have devoted one evening a year to ‘Poems and Poetry.’ This evening is primarily intended to be a fun-filled event in which poetry and the spoken word come to the fore. But poetry is also one of the classical art forms, and therefore something we as architects absolutely must give close consideration to. Poetry can often be a concentrated and seemingly simple way to express very complex things, and of course we want our students to be able to express their creative urges in as many ways as possible, and this evening also provides a source of inspiration. The point is not to find poetry about architecture. Or as a journalist for Metro magazine asked, “Poetry at Chalmers? What do you read, integrals?” No, it’s about desire, joy, and sorrow—life dressed in words. * Bring your own poem

Student workshop: ‘Paperscapes –organoleptic interfaces’: The imaginable territory of farming by Chalmers MA Students for Frauke’s performance. (Producers: Peter Christensson + Anna Maria Orru)

a landscape for hosting farming and butoh The crafting of this ‘paperscape’ resembles the making of a symphony, where the act of embodiment and farming are to encounter. You are welcome to watch, or jump in to assist, in this setting assembled by Chalmers students for the lunchtime dance performance by Frauke. The produced space intends to create a stage for intervention using the butoh body to cultivate the senses; a paper-landscape, a music installation by Derek Gripper, and dance performance by Frauke meet in its centres to explore an understanding between the urban environment and ourselves. Here we create a fictional garden mimicking the method of natural farming, a concept devised by revolutionary Japanese farmer Masanobu Fukuoka.

Performance: Frauke (Research: Anna Maria Orru, Music installation: Derek Gripper ‘Cassette Locale’)

This lunchtime performance is an encounter between Malian kora compositions, natural farming and butoh dance. The setting has been crafted in the workshop ‘Paperscapes’, where students explored organoleptic interfaces in the making of ‘ the imaginable territory of farming’. Whereas, the body becomes a cartographical tool tracing the hand-made landscape in order to artistically explore an understanding between the urban environment and ourselves. How attached are we to our limbs? How could prostheses look like in the future? And what would the philosophy behind constructing ones own arm be? During the AHA festival we examine the body via speculative storytelling and image creation. In our limb-laboratory you will be guided through the process of constructing, transforming, manipulating, and making your own arm. Join us on this artistic exploration of pioneering scientific research from Chalmers University. * Bring your own Body (BYOB) * PhD’s featured: Max Ortiz Catalan and Thierry Berlemont

Workshop: Frauke / Anna Maria Orru - Bodily cartography – via Butoh: organoleptic interfaces (Atelier + Outdoors)

This workshop, led by Frauke (butoh dancer) and Anna Maria Orru (researcher), places itself in the interstices of body, movement and landscape. In this manner, we try to explore how our bodies are motivated by the environment and vice versa. Your body becomes a cartographical tool tracing the landscape in order to artistically explore an understanding between the urban environment and ourselves. The aim, through butoh, is to become aware of your bodily engagement with the site (a state of high physical consciousness), and to monitor the organoleptic interfaces that arise. The workshop will be a learning immersion into butoh, coupled with a phenomenological analysis to capture our reflective practice. Here your body becomes a resource chamber of data capturing the sensorial language of the site.

'No Waste Cooking' Presentation: Andrea Hvistendal

Visual Artist Andrea Hvistendahl’s ‘Food and Climate Action’ piece appeared at a Stockholm gallery for the first time in 2009. No Waste Cooking is about saving and upgrading food that otherwise would have been thrown away (in cooperation with grocery stores-ICA kvantum Sannegården for this performance). The performance transforms the food as it is cooked into tasty dishes and served in front of the guests. Energy and resources are being added, not thrown away. At the same time, it offers a base for dialogue where we can reassess our values and behavior patterns around food. The plan is when you eat and talk about the art it becomes a part of you, making you carry the action’s message within.

Food performance + Party (Sigurd Cafe)

    (acrobatic entertainment by Acroyoga Göteborg)

Enforcing the evening’s theme of engagement, Acroyoga Göteborg shows that bodies can carry, counterbalance, press, move and lift each other in an infinite amount of ways. We look for possibilities and explore how far our balance and trust takes us. An acroyoga performance by Ola Löfgren, Anna Larsson, Niclas Lindner and Maria De Frumerie.

Jaap Blonk

Fredrik Hansson / Okidoki

Fredrik Hansson is an architect based in Gothenburg and initiator of Okidoki Architects, Archileaks.se and Archfilm Gbg. Besides working as an architect across the entire scale of architecture and developing his own practice, he takes an interest in the meeting of architecture and “something else” – which can be just about anything, as long as it destabilizes the definition of what architecture is an could become. An exploration with a fundamentally pragmatic attitude towards architecture as something real and available for experience.

Andrea Hvistendahl

Jonas Nobel + Fredrik Stenberg / Uglycute

Søndergaard första diktsamling, Sahara i gruva hænder (Sahara i mina händer) publicerades 1992.

Sedan 2006 driver hon sitt eget arkitektkontor, APPMZ Architekci.

ABOUT THE AHA! FESTIVAL

The AHA! festival explores encounters between art and science during a two-day event at the Chalmers University of Technology, supported by the Departments of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Physics, Microtechnology and Nanoscience, Industrial and Materials Science and Communication and Learning in Science, and Health Engineering Area of Advance.  It is an international festival intended to provide a stage for enlightening and surprising experiences, staging surprises, new thoughts and displaced perspectives that lead to alternative modes of thinking about exploring the world through art and science. We invite scientists (physicists, historians, astronomers, engineers), artists (dancers, musicians, painters, poets, acrobats) who reside in these borderlands and wish to share their vision and work.

HISTORY

The relation between science and art has become more complex, but is just as important to attend to. Their meeting is still that of theory and practice, but also something more: a meeting of causal connections and meaningful coherences, of given conditions and unsuspected possibilities, of the order of things and our own place within it.

Today, ”science” no longer refers to systematic knowledge, but rather to a highly professionalised, specialised and often technically advanced activity intended for the production of empirically secure facts. Similarly, ”art” is no longer a methodical ability, but rather a complex and autonomous activity comparable to science: the creation of images, sounds, and other forms of sensuous experience with a most immediate effect. Forms that grab hold, shake up, leave us at a loss. Experiences that make us question ourselves and the world around us.

By bringing together science and art, architecture has provided an ideal playing field for such a confrontation for the first two festival in 2014 and 2015. In 2014, October 21–23, the first festival investigated the theme ‘embodiment.’ In 2015, November 2-4 the festival explored numbers, an underlying element in our lives. In year 2016 the festival was a joint voyage between the Departments of Architecture and Department of Physics to explore the theme ‘uni-verse,’ the fabric of life. All festivals offer three days of seminars, workshops, conversations, exhibitions, concerts, performances, and mingles, through thought-provoking experiences, hands-on surprises, itinerant perspectives, and savoury ideas. The festival welcomes students and researchers from all universities, and the general public, to turn the searchlight onto the relation between two different– but equally important – human activities; ’Science and art.’
