2018 HIGHLIGHTS

PLAY EVERYTHING

Within the natural sciences, you often expect there to be one, single correct answer. But many of the challenges in our society today, require a combination of competences and perspectives. When playing around with facts and logics, you never know what to expect. You could discover the unexpected, that could bring us to the next level. Or just have fun. If it is a computer game or some sport, you play, or music, or a movie, or a theater play, or… Regardless of what you play, you explore what we know, and what we do not know. Welcome to discover new perspectives together with us, and to play everything.

seminar

Ledningsrummet

Monday 10:00-10:30

Cecilia Berlin thinks everyone should Dance their own (or someone else’s) disputation, because it was as fun as it was challenging. She will give a 30 minute description of her creative process and how it in large is similar to education. The talk is followed by a workshop where participants are not required to be able to dance - but together we will explore different principles of non-verbal communication, such as how we interpret direction, movement, sharpness, flowing movement and much more. It wont be a dance class exactly, but definitely a good opportunity to explore how a richer body language can explicate communication.

Interactive paintings - combining visual art, interaction design and electronics

Peter Ljungstrand

seminar

ACE

Monday 11:00-11:30

Humans has used visual art as a means of expression since at least the stone age. Painters need skills in both craft and art to be successful and the creation process is typically dynamic. But when the painting is finished, the art piece becomes a static object. With advances in material science, electronics, software and interaction design, we can create paintings that become dynamic and react to user input and change their expression, yet are still fully painted by hand.

Future challenges within research as well as in other parts of the society, requires a combination of competences and perspectives, if we are going to create a sustainable future. Albert Einstein said: The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift. If we consider the way we understand our world, as made up of things we can see and interpret rationally, there is also many experiences we cannot organize, intellectualize and quantify, simply because it is too complex. Art is a way to understand our world, as well as science is, with its own characteristic language and approach. What can Chalmers do to nurture and develop, the sixth sense, for a sustainable future?

At the AHA! Festival UKON & Njurmännen will perform the new piece ”Mordets scenografi”. By listening to large amounts of recordings from court trials UKON has directed his attention towards the small and seemingly pointless details surrounding the crimes, what was eaten, what cars were driven, what music was listened too, the smalltalk before and after. ”Mordets scenografi” is an unpleasant poem containing clothing brands, candy, interior decor and weather - but no violence.

Wednesday 09:00-10:30

Can we learn astronomy using Japanese comics and animation? Yes, of course! Costellazione Manga (Manga Constellation) is a space travel where the heroes of our favourite mangaand animewill guide us through the starry sky and the physics of the astronomical objects it contains. At forty years since the first broadcastings of Starzinger and Galaxy Express 999 we will look at the sky and we will ask ourselves: is it possible to travel between stars and galaxies and meet new friends from other worlds? How do planets form? How are stars born and what is their fate? The special guests of this Costellazione Manga event will be the heroes of famous manga and anime such as Starzinger, Sailor Moon, Saint Seiya and Dragon Ball.Costellazione Manga is an astronomy outreach project that was developed with the aim of engaging people through references to widespread knowledge that are normally not associated with science. The links between art and science have been proved to be a powerful tool to get people interested in astronomy.

Musical Cubes

Gunnar Oledal

interactive installation

ACE

During the festival

Musical Cubes is an interactive sound installation for public spaces. The installation works like a collaborative step sequencer as it consists of eight interactive translucent cubes (2x4 matrix) hanging from the ceiling at a certain height. Users are able to interact by standing underneath a cube and by their presence in that space initiate a sound and effect the shine of colored light when the sequencer passes the cube. Users can record new sounds into the cubes by tapping on them. Additionally it's possible to copy sounds between two cubes by simply bringing them together. These different functions reflect our underlying intention. As the handling of the Musical Cubes is somewhat restricted if used alone, it becomes clear that our installation is intended for bringing people together in a collaborative interaction. By standing under the cubes, recording sounds and perhaps alter ones distance to the cubes, the users can create a beat or melody together.

During the festival

Martin Skimutis and Christian Bjärgö explores the man made site and the act of dwelling, through miniature worlds constructed from recycled materials. The enviroments seems desolate or recantly vacated, witch invokes a sense of mystery or drama, but also makes room for the spectator to inhabit them with their own experiances and narratives. The artist wishes for the visitors to actively interpret these sites and interact by sharing their own projections and stories through painting, drawing or writing.

ABOUT THE AHA! FESTIVAL

The AHA! festival explores encounters between art and science during a two-day event at the Chalmers University of Technology, supported by the Departments of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Physics, Microtechnology and Nanoscience, Industrial and Materials Science and Communication and Learning in Science, and Health Engineering Area of Advance.  It is an international festival intended to provide a stage for enlightening and surprising experiences, staging surprises, new thoughts and displaced perspectives that lead to alternative modes of thinking about exploring the world through art and science. We invite scientists (physicists, historians, astronomers, engineers), artists (dancers, musicians, painters, poets, acrobats) who reside in these borderlands and wish to share their vision and work.

HISTORY

The relation between science and art has become more complex, but is just as important to attend to. Their meeting is still that of theory and practice, but also something more: a meeting of causal connections and meaningful coherences, of given conditions and unsuspected possibilities, of the order of things and our own place within it.

Today, ”science” no longer refers to systematic knowledge, but rather to a highly professionalised, specialised and often technically advanced activity intended for the production of empirically secure facts. Similarly, ”art” is no longer a methodical ability, but rather a complex and autonomous activity comparable to science: the creation of images, sounds, and other forms of sensuous experience with a most immediate effect. Forms that grab hold, shake up, leave us at a loss. Experiences that make us question ourselves and the world around us.

By bringing together science and art, architecture has provided an ideal playing field for such a confrontation for the first two festival in 2014 and 2015. In 2014, October 21–23, the first festival investigated the theme ‘embodiment.’ In 2015, November 2-4 the festival explored numbers, an underlying element in our lives. In year 2016 the festival was a joint voyage between the Departments of Architecture and Department of Physics to explore the theme ‘uni-verse,’ the fabric of life. All festivals offer three days of seminars, workshops, conversations, exhibitions, concerts, performances, and mingles, through thought-provoking experiences, hands-on surprises, itinerant perspectives, and savoury ideas. The festival welcomes students and researchers from all universities, and the general public, to turn the searchlight onto the relation between two different– but equally important – human activities; ’Science and art.’
