Ammy Olofsson

Ammy Olofsson is a swedish glass artist and graduated from the master's programme in Ceramics and Glass at Konstfack University College of Arts Crafts and Design in 2016. Now she runs the Glasstudio ”Glasbolaget i Bro” togehter with Erika Kristofersson Bredberg, where she works with her own art and is also a part of the artist group ”BOOM!”. Since graduating she has been a part of exhibitions at the Swedish National Museum, ArkDes and National Liberty Museum in USA to mention a few. Ammy is inspired by the hacker movement, traditional crafts, new technology and old science fiction.

Andreas Alm

Andreas Alm, 45, har varit elittränare i fotboll i tio år och före det elitspelare och fotbollsexpert på TV4. Under sin tid som tränare har Alm vunnit allt som går att vinna i Sverige och lett sitt lag till gruppspel i Europa. Idag tränare han BK Häcken på Hisingen. Alm är även författare till boken »Se på spelet«, en bok om spelförståelse i fotboll som sålt i 35 000 exemplar i Sverige och internationellt. Boken handlar om kognition, perception och hemligheten bakom de bästa spelarna i världen.

Anna Maria Friman

For the last twenty years Anna, from Göteborg, has been working as a freelance musician (voice and hardanger fiddle) in project based chamber music ensembles, soloist engagements ranging from small ensemble formations (such as Gavin Bryars Ensemble, Hille Perl´s Sirius Viols and Bang on a can All-Stars) to Symphony Orchestral works, as well as with her two regular groups Trio Mediaeval and Alternative History. In 2018 she started a new collaboration with Marco Ambrosini and Catalina Vicens. Most of her ensemble engagements over the last ten years have included performers from different musical styles, crossing borders between folk, improvisation, contemporary, medieval and renaissance music. She has performed and given radio broadcasts throughout Europe, USA, Mexico, Canada, Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan, and since 2001 she has recorded for ECM Records. In 2010 Anna completed a Doctor of Philosophy in Music at the University of York, UK where she researched the modern performance of medieval music by women. For five years she taught singing and coached vocal ensembles at the University of York, and further through the years she has very much enjoyed giving vocal masterclasses and ensemble workshops at different academic institutions in Europe and USA, teaching at summer courses as well as coaching individual groups.

Anna Maria Gabrielli

Arve Henriksen

Born in 1968, Arve Henriksen studied at the Trondheim Conservatoryfrom 1987-1991, and has worked as a freelance musician since 1988.
Henriksen has composed and commissioned music for festivals, films anddocumentary programs. He has a long discography counting over 180records in total on various record labels. Received together withSupersilent The Alarm Award 2004. He has been the artist in residence atMoers Jazzfestival 2006, OIOI-festival in Bergen 2008 and at Molde JazzFestival 2009. From 2004-2006 he was a part of the European JazzLaunch project. He has received Norsk Jazzforums Buddy Award 2005.Radka Toneffs Memorial Award 2007, Paul Acket Award at North Sea JazzFestival 2011 and DNB and Kongsberg Jazzfestival´s Musician Award2011. He has been nominated to Nordisk Råds musikkpris 2009 and alsonominated to European Jazz musician of the year 2009. In 2016 hebecame Doctor Honoris Causa at The University of Gothenburg.Nominated with Supersilent for Nordisk Råds Musikkpris to be announcedin October 2017. The ECM «Rimur» record together with Trio Mediaeval isnominated for Grammy Award 2018 as one of Manfred Eicher´s BestProduced Records. Commissioned music «Height of the reeds» togetherwith Jan Bang, Eivind Aarset and Jez Riley French for The Humber Bridgeproject Hull City of Culture 2017. «Height of the reeds» is now releasedon cd and vinyl on Rune Grammofon.

Carl Lindberg, Jan Lennartsson

Carl Lindberg is docent in Matematical Statistics from Chalmers, and has also been adjunct professor in Financial Mathematics at Uppsala University and Chalmers. Jan Lennartsson has a Ph.D in Mathematical Statistics from Chalmers but he started his career as a professional handballplayer. He has played 125 games for the Swedish Handball team and won gold in the Swedish Handball League 2004 and 2005. Both Jan and Carl is today working at the Second Swedish National Pension Fund in Gothenburg.

Catalina Vicens

Catalina Vicens combines a vibrant international soloist and research career. Having specialized in performing on antique keyboard instruments, she has been invited to play on the oldest playable harpsichord in the world, featured in her latest recording “Il Cembalo di Partenope”; the 15th century gothic organ of St. Andreas in Ostönnen (one of the oldest and best preserved organs in the world, as well as several collections in the UK, Europe and USA. She is also recognized for her work with medieval portative and positive organs, clavisimbalum and clavicytherium. Vicens has been invited as guest teacher, harpsichord, fortepiano, medieval and chamber music in places such as the Longy School of Music Cambridge (USA), Universität der Künste Berlin and the Folkwang Universität der Künste Essen (Germany), the Renaissance Academy in Lunenburg (Canada) and teaches regularly at the Early Music Course at Burg Fürsteneck and the International Portative Organ Days in Germany, which she curates since 2011. In 2016 she served as jury member at the Jurow International Harpsichord Competition.

Cecilia Berlin

Cecilia Berlin is the Chalmers researcher who heard about the competition ”Dance your PhD” in the year 2011, right after her own disputation. After 6 years of considering the idea she figured out how to frame her own ergonomics research with movement. The result was a video where Cecilia dances all the parts herself. The video became Chalmers contribution to the competition and most likely the first danced dissertation about ergonomics. On a daily basis Cecilia conducts research and education at Chalmers about workplace ergonomics within production environments.

Daniel Berg

Daniel Berg: Marimba principal, chamber musician, composer and teacher. Berg is lecturer in musical impersonation and teaches percussion, chamber music and ensemble, at academy of Music in Gothenburg, Örebro and Stockholm.

Daria Dall’Olio

Daria Dall’Olio is a PhD student in astronomy at Chalmers University of Technology – Onsala Space Observatory, where she works on magnetic fields in star-forming regions. Daria is active in popularising astronomy and has authored several outreach articles and conducted seminars and planetarium shows.

David Sumpter

David Sumpter is Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. Originally from London, but growing up in Scotland, he completed his doctorate in Mathematics at Manchester, and held a Royal Society Fellowship at Oxford before heading to Sweden. His scientific research, including over 100 articles, covers everything from the inner workings of fish schools and ant colonies, the analysis the passing networks of football teams, segregation in society to machine learning and artificial intelligence. He was awarded the IMA’s Catherine Richards prize for communicating mathematics to a wider audience. His first popular science book was Soccermatics in 2016, followed by Outnumbered in 2018.

Erik Einebrant

Fredrik Höök

Fredrik Höök, head of the Biological Physics division at Chalmers, develops surface-based bioanalytical sensors, with special emphasis on studies of cell-membrane mimics and biological nanoparticls such as virions, lipid vesicles and exosomes for medical diagnostic and drug-discovery applications. His laboratory is presently focused on microfluidic platforms for separation of cell-membrane components to facilitate improved analysis of membrane proteins and virus binding. The group also work on flow-cytometry like approaches for improved characterization of biological nanoparticles. FH has been awarded the Göran Gustafsson prize in Physics by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA) and is member of The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA).

Gunnar Oledal

Gunnar Oledal works as senior developer and researcher at RISE Interactive Gothenburg, Sweden. "I see myself as a technology oriented designer. I've transitioned my focus the last few years towards physical computing, which I find very exciting. Being part of the development process from concept idea, to a working prototype is so rewarding! With my background in music, I also love to work in the area where technology meets music, building new strange music instruments, or repurposing existing technology for a musical context."

Kathryn Strong Hansen

Kathryn Strong Hansen and Annamaria Gabrielli are lecturers at the Division for Language and Communication at Chalmers. Kathryn holds a Ph.D. in literature from the University of Southern California and her current research focuses on the benefits of literature in scientific and technical education.Annamaria teaches technicalwriting and Maritime English and her current research aims at improving cross-curricular teaching and learning methods.

Lena Einhorn

Lena Einhorn started her career as a doctor, with a Ph.D. in virology and tumour biology from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. Since 1989 she has been active as a writer, filmer and director. Her latest novel Madeleine F., released in 2016, was reviewed as ”exciting as a psychological thriller”. In the novel Ninas resa, she has told the story of her mother, one of the last to leave the Warzaw ghetto alive. The novel was awarded the August prize. Ninas resa also became a film, which was awarded with two Guldbagge awards for best picture, and best manuscript. Her latest book Geniet från Breslau was released in august of 2018.

Luc Willekens

Luc Willekens studied Medicine at Radboud University, Nijmegen, and worked as a family doctor.As director of a locum organization in Amsterdam (WHAM) for general practitioners contributed to further professionalization of their specialism.Lecturer and coordinator of education on medical skills at the University of Amsterdam.Studied architecture at TU Delft, faculty of architecture.Works as Independent architect at his own office, OOMarchitects, in Amsterdam.Lecturer and tutor at TU Delft, department of Architecture.Organized and designed architectural objects and folies for several multidisciplinary projects on architecture, theatre, dance and autonomous arts for Ontwerpers A’dam, office for architecture.Coordinator of a master project on expressing the narrative of literature and films in architecture.Connecting the writing of poems with the description of the participating research he is doing for his PhD thesis on out-patient healthcare facilities.

Marco Ambrosini

Marco Ambrosini was born in 1964 in Forlì (Italy). After studying violin and composition, he devoted himself to the nyckelharpa, which he discovered in a museum in Trondheim,Norway in the late 1980s. He is considered one of the pioneers of the nyckelharpa outside Scandinavia and one of the first to trace this instrument back from Swedish folk music to early and to contemporary music.He teaches at several conservatoires in Europe.He has recorded more than 160 CDs and over the last 10 years has been released almost exclusively by Sony Classical/Deutsche Harmonia Mundi and ECM.

Michael Eriksson

Michael Eriksson: Project leader for the AHA!festival. Eriksson has a research interest in artistic Interventions and today work as strategic management support at Chalmers.

Njurmännen & UKON

Njurmännen are the industrial synth minimalists from Linköping who after their start in 1983 has gained cult status. In conjunction with the magazine OEI in 2006 wanting to make a sound art edition in the form of a CD, a collaboration was started with the poet and psychoanalyst Ulf Karl Olov Nilsson, alias UKON. This meant an artistic reawakening, and together UKON and Njurmännen has done several performances and recordings alternating experimental sound collages with UKON’s characteristic catalogue poetry. Since a few years the original member Anders Göransson, alias Skuggan, is back in the band and the group has no started alternating UKON’s lyrics with new versions of old creations through which they meet both a new and an old audience.

Pierre Mosser

Martin Skimutis, Christian Bjärgö

Martin Skimutis and Christian Bjärgö are two artists from the high coast region in the north of Sweden, active in Gothenburg. Outside of this particular medium, Martin works with scenography and games, Christian works as a sculptor and illustrator. They have been friends since their early teens but have worked together with this medium for the last three years. This is the fourth collaboration they have together.

Stefan Bengtsson: President and CEO of Chalmers since August 2015. Bengtsson is professor of solid-state electronics, with a research interest in micro- and nano-electronics, primarily silicon-based materials and devices.

Tobias Granmo

Tobias Granmo: Violinist, chamber musician and teacher. Granmo teaches violin and chamber music and is responsible for chamber music, at Academy of Muci and Drama at Gothenburg University.

Torbjörn Lundh

Torbjörn Lundh har en utbildning från Uppsala i Teknisk fysik och en forskarutbildning i ren matematik, efter detta gjorde han tre postdocs vid Cambridge, NY och Institut Mittag-Leffler och blev efter hand allt mer involverade i biomatematik. Han har bland annat arbetat tillsammans med kärlkirurger både på Sahlgrenska och i Stanford med nya medicintekniska uppfinningar. Denna termin är han tillbaka på Institut Mittag-Leffler där hela terminen är ägnad åt biomatematik.

Torbjörn Vestberg

Torbjörn Vestber är doktorand på institutionen för klinisk neurovetenskap på Karolinska Institutet. Han har arbetat 6 år i Kina med chefsrekrytering och medarbetarutveckling. Just nu är han aktuell med boken Hjärnboll (Natur & Kultur).

Trio el Gancho

Mukryan Abubakr is one of Sweden’s most talented improvisers within the Oriental music.He’s constantly touring in Canada and the Middle east with different orchestras. During the autumn he was the soloist and backed up by Norrköping’s Symphony Orchestra. With ten years of music university education behind him (five in Iraq and five more in Stockholm) he recently finished his master degree at the Royal College of Music in Sweden.
Jonathan Bondesson belongs to the new generation of nordic flamenco guitar players.He has played together with recognised flamenco dancers and Sweden’s best singers such as Ricardo Rubio, Josefine Chiacchiero, Eva Milich, Marianne Holmboe, Giraldo Åkerberg and Ellen Pontara. He’ve got an exam at the master program at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and the well known flamenco school in Spain, Foundation Cristina Hereen where he studies over a year and a half.
Kim Persson has been brought to attention for his stunning project The Master and Kim where he combine theater with music with his own compositions and screenplays. He plays many different flutes and are one of few who’ve mastered the recorder in the Swedish folk tradition.Kim’s also engaged in his last trimester at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm at master level. Newly acclaimed as “Young Soloist” of the year at Art of Scenery in Sörmland.

Yvette Gustafsson

Yvette Gustafsson is a comic book artist focused on adventure comics and science based comics. She makes the comic ”Infosfären” for Populär Astronomi, where she writes about space related facts and her comics can also be seen at Universeum in the space exhibition there. She also makes the adventurous comic Zak&Ting, previously published in the comic magazine Nemi.

ABOUT THE AHA! FESTIVAL

The AHA! festival explores encounters between art and science during a two-day event at the Chalmers University of Technology, supported by the Departments of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Physics, Microtechnology and Nanoscience, Industrial and Materials Science and Communication and Learning in Science, and Health Engineering Area of Advance. It is an international festival intended to provide a stage for enlightening and surprising experiences, staging surprises, new thoughts and displaced perspectives that lead to alternative modes of thinking about exploring the world through art and science. We invite scientists (physicists, historians, astronomers, engineers), artists (dancers, musicians, painters, poets, acrobats) who reside in these borderlands and wish to share their vision and work.

HISTORY

The relation between science and art has become more complex, but is just as important to attend to. Their meeting is still that of theory and practice, but also something more: a meeting of causal connections and meaningful coherences, of given conditions and unsuspected possibilities, of the order of things and our own place within it.

Today, ”science” no longer refers to systematic knowledge, but rather to a highly professionalised, specialised and often technically advanced activity intended for the production of empirically secure facts. Similarly, ”art” is no longer a methodical ability, but rather a complex and autonomous activity comparable to science: the creation of images, sounds, and other forms of sensuous experience with a most immediate effect. Forms that grab hold, shake up, leave us at a loss. Experiences that make us question ourselves and the world around us.

By bringing together science and art, architecture has provided an ideal playing field for such a confrontation for the first two festival in 2014 and 2015. In 2014, October 21–23, the first festival investigated the theme ‘embodiment.’ In 2015, November 2-4 the festival explored numbers, an underlying element in our lives. In year 2016 the festival was a joint voyage between the Departments of Architecture and Department of Physics to explore the theme ‘uni-verse,’ the fabric of life. All festivals offer three days of seminars, workshops, conversations, exhibitions, concerts, performances, and mingles, through thought-provoking experiences, hands-on surprises, itinerant perspectives, and savoury ideas. The festival welcomes students and researchers from all universities, and the general public, to turn the searchlight onto the relation between two different– but equally important – human activities; ’Science and art.’
